3 Types Of Humidity Damage That Can Occur To Autographed Prints

Alexa Smith

An autographed print offers an exciting collectible and something you can proudly display in your home. Whether you want to save the autograph to sell in the future or you are not quite ready to hang the piece yet, you want to ensure the autograph remains protected and in mint condition.

Whether you have a framed picture, movie poster, or some other type of print, high levels of humidity can cause damage to your artwork. Learn how humidity-controlled self-storage can protect your prints from specific forms of humidity damage. See the different forms of humidity damage that can occur to your autographs.

1. Warped Frames & Casing

You will typically protect autographs through the use of frames or plastic shell cases. Exposure to high levels of humidity can directly impact those. Specifically, any wood or plastic parts can warp due to high humidity exposure. The warping could lead to changes on the print itself and may even warp the presence of the autograph.

With humidity control, you can keep prints in their original frames and ensure you don't run into any issues with the frame changing shape at all.

2. Faded & Destroyed Autographs

The autographs you get could come in a wide range of ink options. You may have a permanent marker, a paint pen, or a standard pen. High levels of humidity and moisture could impact the appearance of an autograph. For example, the ink on an autograph could drip down or smear.

If you ever plan to sell the print in the future, the autograph value could go down dramatically due to the fading. Proper storage will help ensure the autograph maintains the pristine condition it was in when you first got the item signed or when you purchased the autograph.

3. Diminished Print Quality

Even if the actual autograph remains protected, the print itself could become damaged and cause the whole item to lose value. For example, exposure to high levels of humidity can cause the corners to curl on the print. The curled corners may not flatten out or lead to creases on the print. Eventually, you may need to replace the whole print.

In a climate-controlled storage environment, you do not need to worry about the curling corners or the condition of the print. Your print will remain in great condition for whatever you decide to do with it.

Look into storage units specifically designed for art pieces to ensure your autographs remain protected.
